Join Bulgarian dance teacher Gergana Panova via Zoom, the popular teleconferencing platform.
Dr. Gergana Panova-Tekath was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She graduated from the National School for Dance Arts in Sofia and was selected by Margarita Dikova for the Filip Kutev Bulgarian National Folk Ensemble, where she danced and choreographed until 1994.
Gergana studied folk dance pedagogy, choreography, ethnology and directing in Bulgaria, and Laban notation, communicative sciences and cultural philosophy in Germany. In 2004 her dissertation on “Dance Beyond the Iron Curtain” was awarded the prize of the year by the Technical University of Dortmund. In 2011 Gergana received her habilitation in Ethnomusicology from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She regularly commutes between Bulgaria, where for 25 years she has headed the Ethnochoreology research at the Institute for Art Studies, BAS, and Germany, where she is Associate Professor of International Dance at Folkwang University in Essen.
Gergana has published numerous articles and has written two books on various aspects of Bulgarian traditional dance. Besides organizing annual summer seminars in Bulgaria (till 2011), Gergana has taught workshops in many countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Israel, Turkey, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Canada, and the United States.
