Miroslav “Bata” Marcetic teaching Serbian dance:
A native of Pancevo, Serbia, Bata has devoted his entire professional career to the preservation and promotion of folklore and dance. He was a lead performer, soloist, and choreographer with the Serbian National Folk Ensemble “Kolo” in Belgrade, Serbia, and Montenegro (former Yugoslavia) for 17 years. He has created a number of prize winning choreographies, both in the former Yugoslavia and in Canada, and many ensembles have won artistic awards under his direction.
In Ontario, Bata works in several dance associations and ensembles, including "Kralj Petar II" since 1993 and Serbian Club “Kordun” since 2004. He worked in S.C.A. “Oplenac” in Mississauga from 1993 to 2004, and in Folk Dance Ensemble “Hajduk Veljko” in Toronto from 1999 to 2006. In 2004, he established his own school of dance in Mississauga, “Academy of Serbian Folk Dancing,” which has a band and more than 300 dancers of all ages, and has won numerous awards in both junior and senior competitions.
The Cultural-Academic State Association of Serbia awarded Bata the Golden Plaque in 2005 for his work in the Canadian Serbian community. He also teaches Serbian and east European dances in the international folk dance community. We welcome him back to FAC for the first time since Oktoberfest 2002.
Bruce Hamilton teaching English country dance:
Bruce is a popular and well-respected teacher of English and Scottish country dancing and morris dancing with 40 years’ experience. He has launched classes, trained teachers, coached demonstration teams, and adjudicated festivals.
A retired research scientist, Bruce is always looking for new ways to understand and present ideas. He tries to weave many threads besides technique and choreography into his lessons. Music, sociability, and physiology are his current favorites. People often say they come away from his classes with things to think about and ways to grow. His weekend callers class also draws high praise.
Bruce lives in Menlo Park, California with his wife, Jo, and as many dogs and cats as her rescue operation happens to have on hand. Bruce runs a biweekly English dance class, and is finishing his term as president of the Country Dance and Song Society this year. We welcome him back to FAC Pinewoods for the first time since 1994.
Marcie Van Cleave teaching Classic Dance Repertoire: Marcie runs FAC’s Friday night international folk dances. She has led folk dance sessions at the New England Folk Festival and has been on staff as a caller at various Country Dance Society, Boston Centre Pinewoods Camp weekends. She has been a member of English ritual dance teams for over twenty years. Marcie enjoys leading workshops in couple dances such as the waltz and hambo. At FAC Pinewoods her classes are geared toward helping beginning dancers feel comfortable with basic footwork, partnering, and repertoire.
Musicians
The Pinewoods Band, led by Tom Pixton, showcases the diverse talents of an eclectic and spirited group that has been playing international folk dance music throughout the US since 1991. Tom, Barbara Pixton, Susan Worland, Patrick Yacono, Ralph Iverson, Julia Poirier, and David Skidmore share with us their energy and amazing repertoire (from Romanian to Ragtime) at all the evening folk dance parties.
During each FAC camp session, expert musicians lead singing, rhythm, or instrumental workshops for all ability levels, continuing the FAC Pinewoods tradition of making wonderful music together.
Coordinators
Dana Sussman and Mari Young are FAC’s 2012 administrative Camp Coordinators.
